New(ish) Comics Day:
Superboy: Man of Tomorrow #4: back on the Clones Are People narrative, which, way to hit Kon over the head with the fact he’s a Real Boy, again. Kon! Sweetie! You ARE enough and also ouch if that hurt as much as a Superboy Prime punch. (Also Clark finally, FINALLY notices Kon’s disappeared off into space)
Also oh no. I’m really glad Kon won the Round Robin, but…DC you have a whole Constantine and Etrigan story sitting there that’s this good? HELLO JASON BLOOD I LOVE YOU. Stop making us vote on these things and just give us the goodies.
The New Champion of Shazam #1-3: this was entirely due to reading the Shazam trade last night. It was helpful in providing more context about who these characters are. Mary! This is a very relatable young adult “I’m going to university…oh wait my dreams have to be put on hold because of family commitments” storytelling. It also is clearly, CLEARLY written by someone who loves the whole Shazam family (Hoppy! The way Hoppy is used is hilarious and I’m glad I had the context to enjoy it). I am hoping that after Mary learns about responsible power and the importance of family she DOES get to go back to Vassar though. She was really enjoying it for the 30 seconds she was there before magic intervened and she had to transfer to the local college with the biology professor who is clearly ignoring ethics requirements in her experiments.
The Flash #790: it’s the first issue of One-Minute War! Look! Everyone’s here! Doing their thing! And oh no, OH NO, I adore this Bart and Ace dynamic and I’m now afraid this is the only place it exists.
Warlord #6: truly, reading this comic is like getting a tour of Mike Grell’s brain. Today, Travis Morgan is no longer in Skartaris! He’s visiting a group of very very white archaeologists (from the US, UK, Sweden and the USSR) at Machu Picchu. The one from the USSR is the only woman (Mariah Romanova) and she has red hair and talks about capitalist tricks and oh look we might have a femme fatale/black widow here.
Mariah and Travis get into a shouting match over the fact Travis is from the US military and he admits he flew a spy plane (to spy on USSR treaty violations! he insists) and Mariah calls him “Capitalist Warmonger” and look do I really need to draw the parallels to Grell’s work with Travis’ identical twin who wears green? It’s funny seeing the bearded one on the other side of this dynamic. (Mariah totally goes off to Skartaris with Trevor). Also there’s a cat demon statue that comes to life.

Machu Picchu Adventure: The Journey Back to Cusco
Once we’d finished our tour, Cherry and I walked down the mountain back to Aguas Calientes town where her friend Florence was waiting. The downhill descent was very steep, and Cherry seemed to be having an easier time than me with my bad knee and lack of general fitness! Her and Florence are working as nurses near Manchester which I had kind of expected actually, she said they’d lived there for about 18 years but got funny looks on other tours when they said they’re from the UK so they just say Philippines. We took a couple of breaks when we started sweating a lot but were careful not to sit for too long and have our legs turn to jelly when standing back up. Cherry was really going for it but I was having trouble keeping up so by the end I was a tired mess but she was fine. Luckily there was a water vending machine for just one sol, however unluckily it shut off after pouring only about 150ml of the 500ml I’d ordered! Once we’d reunited Cherry with Florence, I told them I was heading off for some shopping and then went straight to Coffee Trotter for a flat white and phone recharge. It was so nice to sit down in the shade with a coffee and relax for about an hour. A sad street dog wandered in at one point to try his luck but was sprayed at and shooed back out. I walked around the Aguas Calientes market a bit and bought a few little souvenirs and then stamped my passport with the Machu Picchu stamp because I’m such a tourist. I figured that I should get some lunch so I stopped in at Infinity near the train station for a cheese empanada and lemonade which hit the spot nicely. When I got back to the train station I saw Leo and Giada sitting in there so I went over to say hi and they invited me for dinner with some French people they’d met a couple days earlier. The journey back was tiring and I could barely keep my eyes open. Once we finally arrived in Ollantaytambo, the Filipino ladies and I found our names on a sign with loads of other names including loads of Israelis and the South African family. Everyone else arrived except for the family so I tried to explain to the lady to look for parents with a small child and once we were waiting in the van they finally joined us and he was asleep in his mothers arms. It was a long drive back to Cusco with a crazy driver that didn’t stop at stop signs, overtook a police checkpoint, and almost rear ended some standstill traffic. The Israelis in the front asked to get out on a tight side street and the driver let them out thinking it was just the two but no of course there were another 5 or 6 in the back who got out too and left the door wide open so the driver had to get out and close it. Once I got back to the hostel I rearranged all my bags and then took advantage of the wifi to figure out what happened to my Revolut card. Of course, it was not enough to trap all my money on there but now it had a fraudulent transaction on it which meant I had to cancel the card and order a new one after using it for literally two transactions in Peru. I decided to get it sent to my hotel in La Paz and hopefully be there at the same time it would arrive. Although I was exhausted I went out for dinner as agreed with Leo and Giada and met their friends, a French couple named Ines and Jean-Baptiste. I’d waited almost 15 minutes for Leo and Giada to show up and was minutes away from bailing and going to McDonald’s but they showed up and we all went to Limo together in the central Plaza de Armas. It was a Japanese Peruvian fusion restaurant but we all went for the Thai style food - I chose the Arroz Thai with beef which was a delicious stir fry of vegetables, rice and beef. It was a more upscale restaurant for Peru but still didn’t cost too much once the bill arrived for my meal and a passionfruit mocktail, about 70 soles or $20.

Ultimate Travel Recommendations: Your Guide to an Unforgettable Adventure
Tumblr media
Traveling opens up worlds of wonder, giving you the chance to explore different cultures, sample unique cuisines, and marvel at natural and architectural beauty. Here are top recommendations to help you embark on a memorable journey, whether you’re a solo  Travel recommendations, exploring with friends, or vacationing with family.
1. Choose the Right Destination for Your Goals
Your ideal destination depends on what you're looking for—be it relaxation, adventure, cultural immersion, or a combination of experiences. Researching the location can ensure you don’t miss hidden gems or local favorites. Here’s a breakdown of some unique travel goals and the best destinations for each:
Adventure Seekers: If you love adrenaline-fueled activities, think about visiting destinations like New Zealand, with its bungee jumping, skydiving, and beautiful trails. Peru offers the unforgettable Inca Trail leading up to Machu Picchu. Consider locations with outdoor activities that align with your preferences, whether it’s hiking, scuba diving, or zip-lining.
Beach Lovers: The Caribbean offers unparalleled beaches with crystal-clear waters and white sand. For something more exotic, the islands of the Maldives or Bora Bora provide a luxurious beach escape, while Thailand offers more affordable yet stunning beach experiences with islands like Koh Phi Phi and Phuket.
Cultural Enthusiasts: For cultural immersion, Japan is ideal for its unique blend of ancient and modern culture, especially in Kyoto with its temples and tea ceremonies. Alternatively, Italy offers rich historical sites like the Colosseum, Vatican, and Pompeii, along with immersive cuisine experiences.
2. Create a Detailed Itinerary, but Allow for Flexibility
Crafting an itinerary helps you cover the must-see spots without feeling overwhelmed or rushed. A balanced plan includes a mix of activities and downtime, giving you space to wander or try unexpected adventures. Break down your itinerary by:
Highlighting Must-Sees: Identify the top spots that drew you to the destination. For Paris, this could be the Eiffel Tower, the Louvre, and Montmartre. For Iceland, include popular stops like the Blue Lagoon, Reykjavik, and Golden Circle.
Leaving Room for Spontaneity: Sometimes the best experiences are unplanned. Leave free blocks in your schedule for local recommendations, sudden events, or relaxing afternoons. This balance helps prevent burnout and keeps the trip feeling organic and exciting.
3. Find the Perfect Accommodation
Accommodation plays a significant role in your overall Travel recommendations. Here’s how to pick the best options:
Hotels vs. Vacation Rentals: If you’re after luxury amenities and concierge services, a hotel may suit you best. Many offer comfort, convenience, and are often located near tourist areas. On the other hand, vacation rentals like Airbnb provide a more local and sometimes affordable experience, ideal if you plan to stay in a city for a longer time.
Hostels for Solo Travelers: Hostels are budget-friendly and often social hubs for solo travelers. You’ll meet like-minded explorers and gain access to local tours, which can add value to your experience. Research reviews, amenities, and locations when booking.
Unique Accommodations: For a one-of-a-kind experience, consider staying in a treehouse, converted van, yurt, or igloo. In places like Norway or Finland, igloos offer the incredible opportunity to watch the Northern Lights from your bed.
4. Prepare for Different Cultures and Customs
Respecting local cultures can enrich your travel experience and foster positive interactions. Learn a few basic phrases if there’s a language barrier, as this shows effort and respect. Knowing key etiquette points is also essential:
Dress Code: In countries with specific cultural norms around clothing, like India or Saudi Arabia, make sure to research local customs and pack accordingly. For example, when visiting religious sites, you may need to cover your shoulders or wear long skirts or trousers.
Tipping: While tipping is expected in the U.S., it may be viewed differently in countries like Japan or South Korea where tipping can sometimes be seen as rude. Familiarize yourself with these customs beforehand to avoid any misunderstandings.
5. Sample Local Cuisine and Visit Markets
Food is an integral part of cultural experiences. Trying local dishes and ingredients is often a highlight of any trip, as it lets you dive into the culture. Here are tips to make the most of culinary exploration:
Food Markets: Visit local markets for an authentic experience. Barcelona’s La Boqueria offers Spanish tapas, fresh seafood, and colorful produce. Markets like Istanbul’s Grand Bazaar also showcase local foods and spices, allowing you to try flavors unique to the region.
Street Food: Street food is not only delicious but affordable. Many street foods are safe as long as you choose vendors with a high turnover of customers. Bangkok is famous for its street food, from pad Thai to mango sticky rice, while Mexico City serves amazing tacos and tamales.
6. Embrace Responsible Travel Practices
Being mindful of environmental and social impact is increasingly important. Here are a few ways to travel sustainably:
Support Local Businesses: When booking tours or buying souvenirs, opt for local businesses over large chains. This helps support the community and often leads to more unique experiences. Many cities offer “buy local” guides, so check online or ask your accommodation for tips.
Eco-Friendly Transportation: Consider taking public transportation or renting a bike to explore the area. Cities like Amsterdam and Copenhagen are bike-friendly, while many places, such as Japan, have efficient public transit systems that can take you nearly anywhere.
Limit Plastic Use: Bring a reusable water bottle, straw, and utensils if possible. In areas where plastic use is high, like certain parts of Southeast Asia, reducing your plastic footprint makes a real difference.
7. Stay Safe and Informed
Before traveling, make sure you have information about the destination’s safety, health, and legal considerations. Here’s how:
Local Laws and Travel Alerts: Some countries have strict rules around things like public displays of affection, alcohol, or even photographing government buildings. Checking travel advisories from official websites can help you avoid unintentional missteps.
Health and Safety Preparations: Research if vaccinations are required or recommended. Carry a basic first-aid kit and any medications you might need, as they may not be readily available in certain locations.
Insurance: Travel insurance can be a lifesaver, especially when traveling to remote areas or engaging in adventurous activities. Make sure the insurance covers medical needs, lost luggage, and cancellations.
8. Document Your Experience Thoughtfully
Documenting your journey through photos, videos, or a travel journal is a great way to preserve memories. Here are tips to capture your travels in an engaging way:
Photography Tips: Play with angles and lighting to create more interesting photos. Early mornings and late afternoons often provide the best natural light for landscapes and cityscapes. Don’t forget to capture candid moments of local life, food, and friends you make along the way.
Writing About Your Experience: Keeping a travel journal can help you remember small details, like the name of that fantastic café or the tour guide’s story about the city. Journaling also provides a way to reflect on what you’ve learned and how you’ve grown from the experience.
Conclusion
Whether you’re setting out on a world tour or a weekend getaway, these travel recommendations will help you make the most of your trip. Embrace the journey, stay flexible, and keep an open mind. Travel isn’t just about the destination; it’s about creating lasting memories and gaining a new perspective. Safe travels!

Machu Picchu Adventure: The Citadel
My day started with a lukewarm shower, despite being on the hottest setting. I then went down for breakfast with the Filipino ladies, the coffee was quite good and I enjoyed yet another ham and cheese sandwich although this bread was much nicer and soft. It seems like this will be the staple breakfast now! We all checked out and then met our guide Joel in the lobby when he came to collect us and walk us down to the main square to collect a couple of others - some Chinese ladies, and a family with a two year old son. I was trying to figure out if they were Kiwis, Australian or South African by their accent. Once I heard them speaking Afrikaans my answer was confirmed. I chatted with them a bit as they were really friendly - they were from Hermanus near Cape Town and were surprised that I knew it for the whale watching. The bus journey was next so we lined up with our tickets and hopped on. I made the mistake of sitting near the back so with the super windy, super steep switchbacks it gave me some major motion sickness but the views were breathtaking over the mountains and valleys at well over 3,000m. Our initial ascent inside Machu Picchu was steep but it was cool in the morning so conditions were ideal for climbing, although there was some light rain which made it a little slippery. Joel took us to the main viewpoint/photo spot for our route although the entire citadel below was covered with fog. While we waited for it to clear away for our photos he explained how Machu Picchu was discovered only in 1911, it had been hidden away by vegetation for over 400 years and was only known by local farmers. The name means “old mountain” in the local Quechua language but no one knows the reason behind it. The Incas had created a water irrigation system that would supply their citadel with 45 litres per minute and used two different styles of construction for their buildings; a basic rock and clay combination for quick and unimportant structures like houses, and then much more detailed sculptured interlocking rocks for structures of high importance like the altar, temple, and a circular building in the centre of the citadel which had two windows. This building was used for telling exactly when the winter and summer solstices were to direct the farmers in planting and harvesting their crops with the coming seasons. The fog cleared away and we were in the perfect spot for photos in front of the citadel so Joel played photographer for about half an hour having us go one by one to pose. We continued down from the viewpoint to the citadel and walked among the ancient ruins. Joel showed us some of their plants like a passion fruit tree and a coca bush that the Incas had tried to grow at a higher elevation than it usually ever would. It started to heat up a lot once the sun was fully out and we were fighting over the little slivers of shade from the walls at each place we stopped. With the tour successfully finished, and our two hours inside Machu Picchu now up it was time to make our way down the 1000m descent.

Day 19 - Aguas Calientes and Machu Picchu
We have breakfast at our B&B and repack the bags. We are only allowed to bring small backpacks on the train so our big ones will be left at the accomodation in Ollantaytambo. It’s time to walk down the road to the train station. Our train leaves at 9:15am and for a continent that is famous for having no rules, PeruRail is very strict.
The train leaves on time to the minute but it’s a very bumpy 90min ride. Jack is not able to use the time to review any photos in case he gets motion sickness - he’s missing the Tangara!
We arrive at Aguas Calientes and our guide for Machu Picchu meets us at the station which is a relief because it’s a bit chaotic and Jack is stressed. Miguel shows us where to buy our bus tickets, takes us to our hotel to check in and goes back to wait in the bus line for us whilst we grab some lunch (empeñadas of course!). At noon we go back and meet up with Miguel and wait for our turn for the bus.
It takes 30 mins to reach the entry to Machu Picchu - up a very windy road with some sheer drops on the side so it’s a bit scary when we meet another bus coming down.
We use the baños, and wait for exactly 2:00pm to be able to enter. We thought PeruRail had lots of rules but Machu Picchu has even more. It’s at this point I realise my hours of research has paid off - Miguel says that our two tickets (circuit 2 + Inka Bridge and Circuit 4 + Wayna Picchu) are the two best tickets and we have chosen times with the least people. Miguel has briefed us that we will use the first 15mins to take photos and then go and do the Inka Bridge trek which takes 30mins. By the time we get back to do circuit 2 it should be much quieter.
First we stop at the upper part of the site where we you can get the “postcard” photos. Miguel is such a great photographer and ends up just taking Jacks phone for most of the tour so he can quickly snap away.
Tumblr media
We walk the Inka Bridge trail which has some narrow sections but I find it ok. At the end of the trail where it’s very quiet Miguel gives us lots of information about the site.
Tumblr media
He mentions that Pachacuti the 9th Incan ruler was very important as he greatly expanded the Incan empire. Pachacuti ruled from 1438 - 1471 and it is thought that he commissioned Machu Picchu.
But why here? The main reason was for a safety, not from invaders but from landslides. Another reason was to be closer to gods - it’s in the middle of the most important mountains to the Incans so it’s a religious centre. Also they found water here which made it easier. However, they had a problem - agriculture was difficult here. So they imported soil from the Sacred Valley.
They didn’t want to disturb the earth, so there was no quarry as many people think. Instead they used rock from landslides and incorporated their designs into the landscape e.g built around the rocks.
The terraces at Machu Picchu were not just for agriculture but perhaps more inportantly for retaining walls to help prevent landslides.
The population according to archeologists was 500-700 - much lower than previously thought. Nobody lived here permanently and families didn’t live here - people took it in turns to stay for perhaps 1-2 years.
After Pachacuti it was the beginning of the end of the Incan Empire. The 12th Incan ruler died along with his chosen heir (probably of smallpox introduced to the continent by the Spanish). His other two sons were granted separate rule over different areas of the empire Atahualpa, the northern portion centered on Quito and Huáscar, the southern portion centered on Cusco. However, a civil war broke out between the brothers. Atahualpa won the war but it has weakened the Incans and shortly after just 168 conquistadors arrived and captured him. He offer vast amounts of gold and silver for his release but upon providing the ransom he was not released and was instead executed.
After the Spanish took control of Cusco some remaining Incans fled and founded a new citadel called Vilcabamba. This lasted around 30 years until the Spanish discovered this site and destroyed it.
Meanwhile Machu Picchu was left abandoned for hundreds of years until Hiram Bingham discovered it in 1911. He was actually looking for Vilcabamba but locals instead showed him the way to Machu Picchu.
After all of this information we walked back along the Inka bridge trail and moved down onto the citadel itself. First through the main gate - it’s big so even Jack can fit through.
Tumblr media
We walk through houses of the ‘professionals’ eg doctors, architects etc. It was possible to differentiate them from working class houses because of the big entrance doors.
We look down on the Temple of Sun and Miguel explains that its curved walls have significant importance. This site would have been used as an astronomical observatory.
Tumblr media
We also look down on the Inka house nearby - the rulers home. This location was chosen because it was the first place to get water from the source and it was right next to the Temple of Sun.
Tumblr media
We learn that the building style in Machu Picchu is different to what we have seen elsewhere in Cusco and the Sacred Valley - there is no tongue and groove mechanism between the blocks of stone. They are simply placed on top of each other. The area is not really prone to earthquakes like Cusco but it is not really known why this method was used. Also I noticed that they had used mortar in the walls around buildings which I hadn’t seen as much of elsewhere.
The other surprising element of the buildings themselves was that they plastered the internal walls in houses with yellow clay (and even possibly painted them). See the different colours of the internal vs external walls:
Tumblr media
We make it all the way to Sacred Rock at the far side of the site. This is where a rock has been carved into the shape of the mountain behind. The Incans worshiped the mountains. Here Miguel gives us lots of tips for our climb of Huayna Picchu tomorrow - where to go, what to see before and after, what time we should get the bus etc.
Tumblr media
We see the Water Mirrors - two perfectly formed ponds in the rock where water would reflect back the night sky to allow for astronomy.
Tumblr media
Next up were the workers houses these were on 2 levels and would have been used for rest only.
It’s time to make our back out towards the exit. See you bright and early tomorrow Machu Picchu!
We take the bus back down, say our farewells to Miguel and do a few admin tasks - buy bus tickets for tomorrow, get more Soles from the ATM, get some groceries (water and snacks for tomorrows hike). Then we go to the hotel for a quick rest.
For dinner we go to Mapacho Craft Beer Restaurant - somewhere that was recommended by the waiter from Moray in Cusco. We have burgers and craft beer but we can’t stay awake too much longer. The alarm is set for 4:00 tomorrow.
